It was the only New Jersey spot to make the list.

The New York Times released its list of the 50 best places to eat in America right now, and one spot in the Garden State made the cut.

Chatpati Delhi, an Indian restaurant in Franklin Park, was lauded by the paper’s former dining critic Pete Wells for its great chole bhatura, a popular Northern Indian dish that consists of a spicy chickpea curry (chole) that’s served with a fluffy, deep-fried bread (bhatura).

This small, casual spot, which sits in a strip mall in Somerset County, opened in June 2023 and is known to be frequently busy. It also specializes in snacks from Mumbai, such as samosas that come on a bun.

Last year, Sweet Amalia Market in Newfield appeared on the list. New Jersey Monthly ran a story on the South Jersey spot in our March issue.

“In a world where the phrase ‘hidden gem’ is tossed around freely, Sweet Amalia Market and Kitchen truly stands out as a local treasure,” Marla Cimini wrote. “Tucked away on a quiet country road in Newfield, this unassuming former farmstand has become a dining destination known for its succulent oysters and innovative seafood dishes. What makes this restaurant even more special is its off-the-beaten-path Gloucester County location, about an hour’s drive from the Shore.”

In 2023, Fat Choy in Englewood made the New York Times list; the restaurant has since closed.
