With his large-rimmed glasses and crimson robe, Tenzin Gyatso hardly looks the part of contemporary rock star. But his Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual leader, might well fill 41,000-seat Rutgers Stadium to capacity when he delivers a talk there this month on “Peace, War, and Reconciliation.”
“It will be an honor to welcome this internationally respected advocate of peace to Rutgers,” says university president Richard L. McCormick, who will present an honorary doctorate of Humane Letters to the diminutive Buddhist leader. The program, scheduled to begin at 8:30 am on the 25th, is open to the public and will take place rain or shine at the stadium in Piscataway (gates open at 6:30 am and close at 10 am). The Dalai Lama—the name means “ocean of wisdom”—will answer questions submitted in advance to www.president.rutgers.edu/dalailama. For more information call 866-445-4678.
His talk at Rutgers will be the Dalai Lama’s first public appearance in New Jersey since 1990, when he helped the Newark Museum consecrate its Tibetan altar. Home to the Western hemisphere’s largest collection of Tibetan art, the museum will celebrate the occasion with an exhibit related to the Dalai Lama from
the 23rd through the end of the year. For more information call 973-596-6550 or visit www.newarkmuseum.org.
