AUNT CHUBBY’S LUNCHEONETTE IN HOPEWELL
In 2019, the building was inherited by the three adopted daughters of Caroline Montello, known as Aunt Chubby. A seat near the door offers a primo view of the day’s pastry offerings, made on site.
STYLE
Classic luncheonette across from the former Hopewell Train station in a building that dates to the 1890s. It has counter as well as table seating and a vintage phone booth said to be able to receive calls.
THE MENU
Espresso, cappuccino and other coffee drinks available, as well as straight fresh brewed. French omelets with cheddar, Gruyère or fresh herbs a specialty; omelets come with home fries and toast. Pro tip: Request a biscuit. Buttermilk pancakes come with local maple syrup. Sausage is made in house. Gluten-free options include the roasted-veggie bowl with two eggs, seasonal vegetables and arugula salad. From the pastry counter come polenta cake, ginger cookies, assorted croissants and more. Breakfast served all day, but lunch options include house-made soup, salads and burgers.
HEADS UP
There is a grab-and-go case with house-made soup. The Chubby’s Project is a nonprofit dedicated to food justice in the community. It has a lunch program for people in need.
