Hours: Daily, 9 am–3 pm.

Price: $

Style: Charming café with brightly colored walls, simple art, and a few small tables.

Don’t Miss: The sandwiches. The BLT with a twist, served with homemade avocado mayonnaise ($5.60); the hot open-faced turkey sandwich, served with Gouda and Brie cheeses and a special sun-dried tomato sauce on eight-grain bread ($5.50); and the summer sandwich, with cucumbers, mushrooms, Swiss cheese, cream cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions, oil, vinegar, oregano, and fresh basil mayo ($5.75) are three of the best. Create the perfect salad, with plenty of fixin’s—including green apples, dried cranberries, dried and salted sweet peas, oranges, cheeses, and meats—and a choice of eight homemade dressings (starts at $5.50 for a large salad with four toppings). The homemade soups are, of course, served with croutons ($4.50–$5). A tasty selection of baked treats lines the counter, too.

Heads Up: The space is a narrow storefront with very few tables, so it’s cozy.

The Scoop: Croutons is relatively new to the downtown Newton scene, but its neighborly vibe fits well in this quaint downtown.
