Style: The quintessential dive bar—in a good way. Not really a café (order at the counter; cash only), Maynard’s is the place in Margate to mingle, shoot pool, slip quarters into the jukebox and enjoy bar food and draft beer.
Don’t Miss: The wings ($8 a dozen), slathered in a choice of five different sauces. Cheeseburgers are reliable ($6.50). You might want to splurge on the Big Bleu ($7), a burger topped with blue cheese and bacon. You can’t go wrong with chicken cheese steak ($7.50), nachos grande ($6) or chicken quesadillas ($8). Dinner specials include Wednesday’s Yuengs and Wings—50 cent wings and $2.50 pints of Yuengling—and Friday’s popular fish ‘n’ chips ($8). There are drink specials every day and at least a dozen beers on tap.
Heads Up: Maynard’s is the kind of place where regulars buy each other rounds. In warm weather, the Starlite Garden, an enormous outdoor patio, is the main attraction.
The Scoop: Margate’s Amherst Avenue was once lined with so many bars it was nicknamed the Barbary Coast. Maynard’s is the last of that party-hearty breed. Developers moved in, and now Maynard’s is the anomaly, surrounded by elegant condos and upscale restaurants.
