Mercato Tomato Pie in Newark

STYLE

Artisanal, coal-fired pizza is the draw, for dine-in and takeout.

THE SCOOP

The spacious, modern dining room offers a view of the kitchen and Mercato’s handmade, 225-square-foot brick oven.

THE MENU

The specialty is thin-crust pizza enhanced with just the right amount of atavistic char. In addition to classic cheese, pepperoni and Margherita pies, Mercato also features white clam, white spinach, mushroom and gorgonzola, bacon burger, Buffalo chicken, veggie, meat lovers (sausage, pepperoni, bacon) options, plus a spicy Devils pie for fans of NJ’s NHL team. Mercato also serves appetizers, salads, pastas and classics such as chicken Parm and spaghetti with meatballs. Check the lengthy beer list and the short list of house cocktails, including the Newark rum punch (banana rum, Myers’s dark rum, pineapple juice, orange juice, lime juice, grenadine).

HEADS UP

Mercato is located next door to its smaller, 1950s-inspired sister, Novelty Burger & Bar. Both are just around the corner from the Prudential Center, ideal for game or concert nights.
