Quick Bite

A Taste of the Punjab at Aroma Indian Bistro in Merchantville

Aditya and Ashima Sirpal opened Aroma Indian Bistro in Merchantville last year because there was no Indian restaurant there. They serve North Indian dishes, the distinctive cuisine of the Punjab.

Aroma Indian Bistro
Merchantville
43 S. Centre Street
856-320-4501

Open: Lunch and dinner, Tues-Sun

Price: $ BYO

Style: A casual Indian spot with tiled floors and tan walls adorned with photos of dried spices and paintings of Indian landmarks. Tables are set with white tablecloths and fresh flowers.

The Scoop: Aditya and Ashima Sirpal opened Aroma in July 2017, choosing Merchantville because it had no Indian restaurant. The couple, originally from Punjab in northern India, offer dishes from that region.

The Menu: Start with vegetable samosas or a Punjabi specialty, cholle bhatura, a mix of chickpeas and fried bread chunks in a spicy sauce. Familiar Indian dishes include chicken tikka masala (pictured), lamb vindaloo, and biryani, a rice dish with your choice of egg, chicken, lamb, goat or shrimp. You don’t have to be a vegetarian to enjoy dal makhani, creamy black lentils with onions and tomatoes, or chana saag, a classic dish of spiced spinach and chickpeas. Among breads, we tried garlic naan and tandoori naan. Both were fresh, warm and pillowy.

Heads Up: The daily $11.99 all-you-can-eat lunch buffet is available only for dine-in customers.
