Restaurant News

Have you been to Boonton recently? There is a bounty of ethnic restaurants to explore: Latin and South American; Cuban; Thai and Turkish, serving halal meat and, of course, Italian.

We have been to an Uzbekistani restaurant many times, which we can recommend. Our most recent find is the newly opened Fasil (entertainment in Turkish) offering Mediterranean cuisine.

FASIL, BOONTON

The menu at Fasil is similar to what you would find in any of the Turkish restaurants in Paterson with items such as shepherd salad, hummus, stuffed grape leaves and kebabs on the menu. We started with an enjoyable eggplant and green peppers app in a tomato sauce that was presented with warm pita bread. Our other appetizer was listed as enginar (artichoke) on the menu with the description being “mixed green beans and dills prepared with herbs.” When we asked the waiter to explain this dish, we were told that it was made with fresh artichokes cooked with beans to give it a special flavor. There are no beans in the dish. What was served tasted and looked like “fresh out of the can” artichokes topped with dill and a few small-diced cooked carrots and peas. We have no need to order this dish again. However, the very generous portion of a mixed grill (entrée), easily shared by two, gave us a good cross section of items to try: adana of skewered ground beef and lamb, shish with lamb, kofte chopped beef with spices, veal gyro (our favorite) and juicy chicken kebabs. The platter also contained rice, a grilled tomato, long hot pepper and ramekin of tahini sauce. With this we ordered tabouli containing mostly shredded romaine with parsley, scallions, finely chopped tomatoes and a dash of cracked wheat. The lemon dressing made this dish although we would have preferred more cracked wheat. Dessert was a made in house, a light and refreshing caramelized custard called kazandibi. Baklava with walnuts; kadayif, a shredded wheat with walnuts; and cheesecake were also available.
