STYLE
Set in a strip mall, this laid-back barbecue spot has a comfortable eat-in space with wooden tables and chairs, wood floors and barnstyle décor.
THE SCOOP
Founder/co-owner Doug Walsh, a Jersey native, honed his barbecue skills in Texas before returning to the Garden State to open JSBBQ in 2010.
THE MENU
Smoked meats are the specialty, so jump right in with the smoked pork belly or jumbo wings (sauces include Korean BBQ, habanero apricot and more). Meats—brisket, pulled pork, chicken, kielbasa—and shrimp star here with delicious, deep smoke flavor. Plates come with choice of two sides, including sweet potato fries, bacon potato salad, collard greens and cornbread. Meatless eaters might cotton to fried Brussels sprouts with honey-sriracha sauce and nachos (hold the meat toppings, which cost extra, anyway). The large house salad with romaine, tomatoes, cucumbers and red onions can be ordered plain or with a protein. Same for the house-made mac and cheese.
HEADS UP
JSBBQ also has a Point Pleasant location (710 Arnold Avenue; 732-899-4400), and each offers a full catering menu.
