A Semi-Successful Night at The Sergeantsville Inn

Getting to this out-of-the-way restaurant takes you down country roads past picturesque farms and old stone homes. It is a beautiful part of the state.

Owners Joe and Lisa Clyde renovated and reopened The Sergeantsville Inn in December 2015 after a fire the previous March gutted the stone building. The Inn has an interesting history; it was a private residence in the early 1700’s and opened as a restaurant in the early 1900’s. It was also once a pelt trading center.

Getting to this out-of-the-way restaurant takes you down country roads, past picturesque farms and old stone homes. It is a beautiful part of the state. The only covered bridge in New Jersey is near here and worth a detour to see. Cozy dining rooms, stone walls, fireplaces and a menu featuring game dishes all add to the charming ambiance of this establishment.

We started with a beautifully plated red and yellow beet salad with goat cheese and a rich confit of duck leg and thigh served with mesclun greens, dried apricots, nuts and raspberry chipotle vinaigrette that we could have had as an entrée ,as it was so well executed. Entrees were not as successful. Three undercooked wild-boar chops were chewy and tough, although the accompanying wild rice and ratatouille were tasty accessories. The andouille sausage, crawfish and shrimp jambalaya was delightfully spicy but looked and tasted like sautéed shrimp over rice, not the Creole classic that we had down in the bayou. Dessert was an individual homemade apple pie served warm in a cast-iron pan.

Along with game options such as buffalo hanger steak; kangaroo (we had that in Australia and never need to order it again); pheasant; venison London broil); and wild boar rack, there are vegetarian selections available as well as fish, chicken, beef and lamb.

Open for lunch Wednesday through Saturday; dinner Tuesday through Saturday; and Sunday dinner from noon to 8 PM.
