Quick and easy doesn’t need to mean unhealthy. At Ánimo, a fast-casual juice and burrito bar, nutritious food and beverages are made with fresh, high quality ingredients, and everything is perfect to enjoy in-store or on-the-go. Juices, juice blends (Ánimo’s take on smoothies), wellness shots and smoothie bowls are vibrantly colorful and come in a variety of flavors. Burritos and burrito bowls are Spanish-inspired and packed with veggies. All salads are made with vegan dressings, and nearly all menu options can be made vegan or gluten-free. For a sweet treat, try a frozen, whipped, custard-like banana bowl either on its own or covered in toppings like fruit or chocolate tahini. Online ordering available.

The Bistro

This Greek, family-owned bistro is a Haddonfield staple, and it’s open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The wide menu has a little bit of everything. For breakfast, check out noteworthy dishes like the pork belly omelet or bacon maple pancakes, paired with a frothy Greek frappe. There are phenomenal appetizers for lunch and dinner, such as the cheesy crab bread and Thai bang calamari. There are plenty of casual dishes like sandwiches, burgers and salads, as well as hearty dinner options, like the grilled octopus Mediterranean salad, grilled lamb leg steak, lobster ravioli and Greek platters. The British Chip Shop

A slice of British culture is found in this pub-inspired eatery. While you can’t purchase beer here (you can BYO), you can capture the taste of the UK’s most authentic dishes while catching up with European football (soccer) on its flat-screen TVs. Battered fish, haddock or chicken and chips, of course, are standout menu items, but you’ll also find dishes like minced beef and onion pies, bangers and mash (sausage and mashed potatoes), beans on toast, corned beef cabbage and fish sandwiches. There are also plenty of British teas and sodas. For more British novelties, food and drinks, check out the English Gardener Gift Shop, located directly across the street.

It may be based in Philadelphia, but South Jersey is lucky to have an outpost of this charming and delicious brunch spot in its own territory, too. Café Lift, a daily, elevated brunch eatery, serves well-crafted sweet and savory breakfast and lunch dishes made with seasonal and locally sourced ingredients. Frittatas, breakfast poutine, mushroom toast and shakshuka are some standout egg entrées, while stuffed cannoli French toast, lemon ricotta pancakes and banana hazelnut crespelle will certainly satisfy your sweet tooth. Salads and sandwiches are served for lunch, and specialty coffees and teas are served all day. The Haddonfield location, which opened in September 2022, is BYO. Reservations are not accepted, so expect a wait, especially on weekends.

Cross Culture

Savor the flavors of India at Cross Culture, a fine Indian restaurant boasting a menu of authentic dishes in a vibrant dining room. The vast menu features a variety of dishes suitable for most dietary needs and preferences. Paneer masala, malai kofta, samosa chaat and vegetable biryani are some of the vegetarian options, and there are plenty of meat and seafood dishes, too, like chicken tikka masala, shrimp tandoori and lamb curry. There are a variety of naan’s to try, as well as a gluten-free option. Cross Culture even sells single serving bottles of lassi (an Indian yogurt-based drink) that are perfect to take home with you. Fuji

Tasty sushi and other Japanese bites are found at Fuji, one of Haddonfield’s longtime restaurants. Fuji has been in town since 2007, and before that, it operated in nearby Cinnaminson for nearly 30 years. The food at Fuji, which earned a three-star review from NJM in 2016, continues to hold up and remain beloved. There are plenty of sushi rolls to choose from, as well as sashimi assortments, soups, salads, tempura dishes, hot pot, and meat and seafood entrées. Dine at a table or along the sushi bar. BYO.

Gass & Main

Gass & Main opened in early 2023, and since, not only has it been the talk of the town, it’s gotten buzz all over New Jersey and beyond. Its chef, Dane DeMarco, was nominated this year for a James Beard award as best mid-Atlantic chef. The elevated American restaurant, which seats 36 guests in its living room-inspired dining area, meshes fine dining with nostalgic classics. Wagyu hot dogs, truffle gnocchi mac ‘n’ cheese, potato chips and caviar, and tuna hoagie tartare are just some of the unique options from this spot. NJM named it one of the best restaurants of the year in 2024. Gass & Main is open for lunch and dinner Wednesday-Sunday, and brunch is offered on the weekends. BYO.

As the only independent coffee shop in town, Jersey Java stands out as one of the best places to grab a cup of locally sourced coffee or tea. Slinging specialty espresso beverages, like flavored lattes, macchiatos and cappuccinos, as well as drip coffee, cold brew, matcha, hot and iced teas, Italian sodas and hot cocoa, there is something for everyone. Fresh baked pastries and quiches, prepackaged snacks and cold beverages like kombucha or sparkling waters are available, too. Additionally, the shop sells a selection of bottled wines from local wineries and New Jersey-themed merchandise. Jersey Java is open 6 am-5 pm daily, and there is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating.

Small but mighty, the Little Hen serves simple yet delightful French-inspired dishes in its 18-seat dining room. The menu is kept tight and only features a few options for each course. Some partager (shareables) include chicken liver mousse and sautéed radishes; escargots and crispy frog legs are some hors d’oeuvres; and entrées feature duck frites and day boat scallops. Keep in mind that menu items regularly change and utilize fresh ingredients. Don’t skip out on the French desserts either. Reservations are recommended for this popular and tiny BYO restaurant.

Mare Monte

Despite opening just months before the pandemic began, Mare Monte has established a popular following in the dining-centric town. The fine Italian restaurant crafts its dishes with homemade pastas and sauces (pastries are homemade, too). The chefs take authentic Italian dishes and add modern twists, leaving guests with tasty entrées like squid ink linguine, mussel risotto, spaghetti silva (with pulled short rib, vegetables and au jus marinara), veal with crabmeat and truffle gorgonzola cream, and plenty of other old-school favorites like chicken parm and mushroom ravioli. The BYO restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating, as well as space for private events.

Verona

Since its grand opening in fall 2018, Verona has become an Italian staple in town. Southern Italian and Sicilian cuisine is served at this lively restaurant seven days a week. Indulge in fan favorite dishes, like penne alla vodka, lobster ravioli, clams casino, and chicken or veal piccata, and wash it down with a BYO glass of wine. There often are specials to look out for, too. Verona offers indoor and outdoor dining, which is located on the sidewalk in front of the restaurant’s entrance in the heart of downtown’s hustle and bustle. At sunset and nighttime, the tables are beautifully illuminated by string and street lights.

You’ll feel right at home at this family-run restaurant. With walls covered in vibrant, lilac paint and white picket fence-like wood detailing throughout, Wanda BYOB creates a charming and cozy atmosphere in its indoor-outdoor restaurant. Named after the chef’s mother who grew up and learned to cook in Trinidad and Tobago, Wanda BYOB dishes out eclectic dishes with an American and French flair. A tuna tartare tower, goat cheese croquettes, copper pot escargot and Thai red curry mussels make up some of the dinner appetizers, while chilean sea bass, housemade potato gnocchi, filet mignon and roasted cauliflower “steak” are featured as entrées. This BYO restaurant is always busy for brunch on weekends, too, where a mixture of sweet and savory dishes are served.

Zaffron

NJM’s readers voted it best Middle Eastern/Turkish food in South Jersey in 2024, and for good reason. Zaffron serves authentic Mediterranean cuisine in its cozy environment. Start out with classic appetizers like red pepper hummus (there even is a hummus of the month) and baba ghanouj that come with pita and vegetables. Amongst the entrées are a variety of kabobs to choose from, including options like chicken, lamb chop, swordfish, filet mignon and much more, and all are served with tzatziki, basmati rice and vegetables. Close out the meal with a slice of baklava or Turkish rice pudding. BYO.
