Shunju is a casual storefront Asian fusion/Japanese restaurant offering friendly service and some dishes that had us oohing and ahhing. We certainly want to return here to try other menu items.
Patrons may want to preview the overwhelming menu at their website beforehand to familiarize themselves with the extensive choices. Items range from hot and cold appetizers, salads, soups, seafood, meat, poultry, curry, noodle, rice and vegetarian dishes, sushi, sashimi rolls, special rolls and sushi bar entrees. While many dishes offered are seen at other Japanese restaurants, our eyes focused in on the pumpkin-and-spinach cream soup, an unusual starter made with spinach and kobacha squash. It was divine with a rich yellow/orange color and creamy pumpkin broth. Another app from the vegetarian side of the menu was creamy, grilled eggplant topped with shallots, scallions and roasted peanuts in a garlic and chile sauce. I could not stop eating this dish! A tamarind and ginger sauce that was the accompaniment of a large, whole crispy-skinned striped bass popped in our mouths. We pulled chunks of the succulent fish off the spine and swiped it through the sauce; a winning, fresh-tasting dish. The one disappointment was from the sushi side of the menu. The Super Volcano was visually interesting with the sushi rolls topped with crunchy, deep fried kani (imitation crabmeat and fish roe) and a spicy sauce. However the tuna was mushy and not spicy. Next time we will try something else. Dessert is listed on the menu, but was not offered.
Open daily for lunch and dinner.
