PARK & SIXTH GASTROPUB, JERSEY CITY
Park & Sixth Gastropub, which opened in October 2013, is the equally impressive sister restaurant of Park & Sixth Restaurant in Jersey City, where we dined a little bit over a year ago. Both are under the direction of chef/owner Brian Dowling and serve casual, creative, comfort food perfect for sharing.
Rather than serving a dipping sauce in a bowl, a blue cheese sauce was smeared on crispy wings, which came with extra napkins and wipes, thank you. We urge you to try them, but be forewarned, they are addictive. Gooey was the word used on the menu to describe the brie mac-n-cheese—it’s the perfect word. Dry–aged, rib-eye sliders, three to an order, came topped with American cheese and a mustard-onion jam. Make sure you order enough for your table—after taking a bite, you will not want to share them. While certainly acceptable, sweet fried scallops and coleslaw were the filling for the scallop tacos; we thought the few scallops got lost in the abundance of slaw. The spiciness in the very generous portion of roasted curry cauliflower with cherry tomatoes, sweet corn, and toasted pepitas was perfect and left our mouths tingling. Cheddar and goat cheese added creaminess to large tater tots served with sriracha ketchup, another recommended dish. There are “big plates” such as pork chop Milanese; pan-seared hake; oven-roasted chicken breast; and steak frites, but we had a most delicious time creating a meal from the small plates, pub snacks and sides.
There is an approachable wine list with bottles and wines by the glass, large beer selections and an interesting offering of cocktails. We tried a refreshing Citrus Fizz made with muddled lemon and orange, simple syrup, Nolet’s gin and ginger ale. It was the type of drink in which the liquor was not discernable, but if I had more than one I might not be able to get off of my seat.
Every Tuesday craft beers are $4 before 7 PM and there is live bluegrass music. Wings are 50 cents on Wing Wednesday. Park & Sixth is open Tuesday through Sunday 11 AM to 11 PM.
